The Moment This Is Really For.

Picture a video call on a Sunday afternoon. A grandmother’s face lights up on the screen. And a child who was born thousands of miles from Kenya greets her, unprompted, in the language she has always dreamed of hearing from her own grandchild. That moment is the entire reason the Heritage Swahili Academy exists.

The Gap We Close.

Over four million Kenyans now live abroad. In 2024 alone, thousands of Kenyan births were registered overseas, most in the United Kingdom and the United States. These children grow up fluent in the language of the country that raised them, and increasingly unable to hold a conversation with their own grandmother.

This isn’t a small, sentimental concern. Language is how a child inherits belonging. Parents who left Kenya for better opportunities didn’t leave so their children would lose their roots along the way, most simply never had a structured, trustworthy way to prevent it. Until now.

Not A Language App.

This is not an app teaching vocabulary in isolation. It’s a deliberate act of reconnection: greetings that let a child properly address their elders, conversation that lets them follow a family gathering, and enough fluency that a video call home becomes a real conversation.

Who This Is For.

Kenyan and Kenyan-heritage children living abroad, of any age, at any starting level, from a child who understands a little but won’t speak, to one starting from nothing, to one who wants to go deeper into culture and not just conversation.

What's Taught.
